Desde el año 2000, la Escuela de Cine del Uruguay y Cinemateca Uruguaya organizan el Festival Internacional de Escuelas de Cine (FIEC), el único espacio en el país dedicado exclusivamente a la exhibición de los mejores trabajos de centros de formación audiovisual profesional a nivel local, regional e internacional. Desde entonces, el FIEC ha reunido trabajos de más de 150 escuelas de cine de todo el mundo, incorporando en cada edición nuevas instituciones y países.
Su misión es, en primer lugar, permitir el acceso del público (con entrada libre) a ese tipo de producción no comercial que habitualmente no tienen difusión más allá del ámbito académico. En segundo lugar, mantener un vínculo directo con otros centros de formación del país y del exterior a través de la difusión de sus mejores trabajos, fomentando el intercambio de diferentes experiencias en formación y producción audiovisual, tanto entre estudiantes como entre docentes, profesionales y el público.
El FIEC se realiza todos los años en el mes de agosto, durante cuatro jornadas en las que se exhibe una selección de cortometrajes de ficción, no ficción y animación, realizados por estudiantes de cine de todo el mundo. Un Jurado Profesional internacional elige los mejores trabajos en cada categoría, incluyendo el mejor corto nacional. Y desde el año 2014 existe también un Jurado Estudiantil (integrado por representantes de tres instituciones de formación audiovisual tanto públicas como privadas) que define sus propios premios. Paralelamente se llevan a cabo encuentros, mesas redondas y conferencias a cargo de realizadores, productores, académicos y profesionales de la industria, tanto locales como extranjeros, dirigidas a estudiantes y egresados de todos los centros de formación audiovisual del país.
En 2020, debido a la pandemia generada por el COVID-19, el festival se realizó por primera vez online, en el canal de YouTube de la ECU, alcanzando más de 38.000 visionados. Además, se realizó también por primera vez un Encuentro Internacional de Estudiantes de Cine, en el cual participantes de más de 22 países intercambiaron sus diversas experiencias de formación y producción audiovisual.
La convocatoria para recibir trabajos se realiza a través de las escuelas miembro de CILECT (la Asociación Internacional de Escuelas de Cine y Televisión) y de FEISAL (Federación de Escuelas de la Imagen y el Sonido de América Latina), aunque también está abierta a otras instituciones que no sean miembro. La convocatoria internacional se abre en enero de cada año y cierra en el mes de abril. La selección de trabajos se anuncia en julio, aproximadamente un mes antes del Festival.

Organized by the Uruguayan Film School (ECU) and Cinemateca Uruguaya since the year 2000, Uruguay’s International Film School Festival (FIEC) is the only venue in the country dedicated exclusively to the exhibition of the best works of professional audiovisual training centers at local, regional and international level. Since then, the FIEC has brought together works from more than 150 film schools from all over the world, incorporating new countries and institutions in each edition.
Its mission, in the first place, is to allow public access (with free admission) to this type of non-commercial production that is not usually disseminated beyond the academic sphere. Secondly, to maintain a direct link with other training centers in the country and abroad through the diffusion of their best work, promoting the exchange of different experiences in audiovisual education and production, both among students and among teachers, professionals and the audience.
The FIEC takes place every year in August, during four days in which a selection of fiction, non-fiction and animation short films made by film students from all over the world are exhibited. An International Professional Jury chooses the best works in each category, including the best national short film. Since 2014 there is also a Student Jury (integrated by representatives of three audiovisual training institutions, both public and private) that select its own awards. At the same time, meetings, round tables and conferences are held with local and foreign filmmakers, producers, academics and industry professionals, aimed at students and graduates of all audiovisual teaching centers in the country.

The call for entries is made through the member schools of CILECT (the International Association of Film and Television Schools) and FEISAL (Latin American Federation of Schools of Image and Sound), although it is also open to other non-member institutions. The international call for entries opens in January of each year and closes in April. The selection of works is announced in July, approximately one month before the Festival.
